Long Backflush Procedure - Universal

Long Backflush - Unclogging Brew Solenoid

SLAYER Espresso Machines feature 24vDC 3-Way Solenoid Valves on each group head. The valves are located off the rear of the group neck and are the main gateway for water flowing through the brew circuit.

Symptoms:
  1. No water through brew group.
  2. Brew group is at set temperature and pump activates once actuated.
Causes:
  1. Infrequent or inadequate routine backflushing.
  2. Dosing too much espresso cleaner into blank portafilter.
  3. Not thoroughly rinsing group after backflushing.
    1. 30 seconds of clear water rinse is recommended!
  4. Solenoid Valve fault or failure:
    1. Poor water quality.
    2. Electrical issue.
    3. Damaged by physical obstruction.
Parts:
  1. 30000-20153 3 WAY SOLENOID VALVE, 24VDC COIL
Long Backflush Procedure - 1 Hour:
Info
Long Backflush Procedure is demonstrated on an Espresso V3 in the guide below. Same concept applies to other SLAYER models.
Tools:
  1. Blank Portafilter
  2. Stubby Flathead Screwdriver
  3. 3 Teaspoons of Espresso Cleaner.
    1. 46000-60010 - 125g SLAYER Cleaner
    2. 46000-60020 - 20oz SLAYER Cleaner

Step 1:
  1. Scoop 3 teaspoons of espresso cleaner into the blank portafilter.
Idea
This is three times (+) the amount as a typical backflush!

Step 2:
  1. Using the hot water spout. Saturate the espresso cleaner to start the activation process.
  2. Allow espresso cleaner to effervesce.

Step 3:
  1. Remove dispersion screw and screen using a stubby flathead screwdriver.
    1. Guide: Replacing Group Head Gasket
  2. Insert blank portafilter into effected brew group.
Alert
Do not remove portafilter during Long Backflush Procedure.

  1. Let sit for 30 minutes.
    1. Do not remove blank portafilter!
  2. After the first half hour. Actuate the group 5 times to Full-Brew and OFF.
    1. Do not remove blank portafilter!
  3. Let sit for an additional 30 minutes.
  4. Remove blank portafilter.
  5. Actuate brew group, if water flows the brew valve has been cleaned.
Complete Long Backflush Procedure with a standard, clear water, backflush without espresso cleaner.

Troubleshooting:
AlertSLAYER recommends all service be performed by an experienced SLAYER Espresso trained technician. For a technician reference near you, please contact SLAYER Support at (206)-284-7171 (#1 in Directory) or email support@slayerespresso.com.

Continued troubleshooting may be required if a long backflush does not resolve a seized 3-Way Brew Solenoid.

Idea
SLAYER Espresso V3, Single Group, and Steam LP feature additional solenoid valves along the brew circuit. These valves are unaffected by the symptoms detailed in this guide. For further support, please contact support@slayerespresso.com.
  1. Physically knock the 3-Way Brew Solenoid.
    1. Guide Below
  2. Verify voltage at solenoid.
  3. Remove, disassemble, and clean solenoid valve.
  4. Replace 3-Way Brew Solenoid.
    1. 30000-20153 3 WAY SOLENOID VALVE, 24VDC COIL
Knock Solenoid:
  1. With moderate force. Knock the solenoid coil with the end of a wrench.
  2. This may cause physical obstructions to break free and allow the plunger to move freely within the valve.
    1. Do not excessively knock valve.
  3. If valve does not free. Continue with above troubleshooting measures.
